Our Aim

Innumerable tonnes of solid waste are generated every year across India. A very small percentage of this is composted, while the rest is dumped in landfills. Our Solid Waste Management (SWM) Programme was established in 2007 to deal with the waste menace faced by communities. The SWM wing creates end-to-end solutions to manage waste generated by urban and rural areas. Our  goal is to reduce the waste that is being used as landfills.

Activities

Municipal Solid Waste Management

Municipal Solid Waste Management

Our trained staff, ‘Green Friends’, collect and segregate urban and rural waste from homes for purposes of composting, recycling or reuse. Ultimately, the waste dumped in landfills is minimised and economically marginalised communities are given employment opportunities.

E-waste Management

E-waste Management

We provide technical assistance and support in handling e-waste collection, segregation and transport to recycling centres. We are in the process of establishing ourselves as an Extended Producers’ Responsibility Organization (PRO) to handle e-waste.

Coastal waste management

Coastal waste management

Our model works by removing coastal debris and seaweed, focusing on tourist areas, restoring coastal biological activity and promoting responsible tourism. Our plan includes setting up a think-tank that works out detailed strategies to address climate change and pollutant influx along the coasts.

Responsible Green Livelihood

Responsible Green Livelihood

We provide technical assistance to people engaged in waste management to create wealth out of waste. We will be exploring avenues to provide better their livelihoods and to reduce waste generation in industries by providing skills up-gradation and entrepreneurial guidance.

Advocacy

Advocacy

Our Green friends not only collect waste, they educate households on the importance of segregation and recycling. Our large-scale awareness campaigns on health, hygiene, and sanitation have brought behavioural change amongst residents in their approach towards generation and disposal of waste.

Waste to Energy

Waste to Energy

The waste collected from the localities we manage is processed and used to generate fuel. Bio-gas plants help generate electricity. The energy thus generated is used to power street lights or cooking. Our projects have set an example of how community participation can help our environment.

Stories Of Change

HiH Connect: Green Friend, Tamil Nadu

I have been with HiH India for 9 years now and this is my first job. Working with waste was not so easy and was looked down upon. Explaining what I do to my family and friends was even tougher.
