Kathivakkam Lake in Greater Chennai was once a neglected and polluted water body, encroached upon and filled with waste, losing its natural function and contributing to frequent urban flooding. Through the PURE (Promoting Urban Water Resilience) project, implemented by Hand in Hand India in partnership with ITC, focused efforts were made to restore this ecosystem through desilting, removal of solid waste, strengthening of bunds, and enhancing water-holding capacity. As a result, the lake now holds 58,470,000 KL of water, significantly improving groundwater recharge and reducing flood risks in surrounding areas. Today, the lake stands as a strong example of urban transformation, recognised by the Tamil Nadu Tourism Department as a growing tourism destination with boating and recreational activities. Once a symbol of neglect, it has been revitalised into a vibrant public space that blends ecological restoration with social and economic value, demonstrating how sustainable interventions can reshape urban environments.
